Planting the Future of Ironwood: Kaltimber x Replant World

In Kalimantan, Ironwood—or Ulin—is more than a tree. Revered for its strength, longevity, and cultural significance, it now faces mounting threats from logging, habitat loss, and its removal from Indonesia’s protected species list. To help secure its future, Kaltimber has partnered with Replant World on a new CSR program to restore Ironwood forests in Gunung Karasik and Lamandau by planting 1,200 trees and supporting the communities that protect them.

This partnership continues Kaltimber’s long-standing commitment to sustainability. We work only with reclaimed wood from disused bridges, houses, boats, and jetties, ensuring no living tree is ever cut for our products. Our CSR efforts extend that philosophy: giving back to forests and people through reforestation, research, and cultural preservation. By joining forces with Replant World, we are not starting from scratch but strengthening a journey we never stopped.

Why this matters

Ironwood (Ulin) is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, yet recently lost its protected status under Indonesian law. Combined with increasing logging pressure and habitat loss, this policy change places Ironwood and its ancient mother trees at severe risk. For the Dayak people and other Indigenous communities, this is not just a matter of ecology but of cultural identity, as Ironwood has shaped oral traditions, taboos, and customary laws for generations.

Kaltimber’s new CSR program with Replant World responds to this urgency. Just as we breathe new life into reclaimed wood from disused structures, we now extend the same principle of regeneration to the forest itself. By investing in Ironwood restoration, we are helping to ensure that this keystone species—and the cultural wisdom around it—survive for future generations.

What the partnership will do

Through this collaboration, Kaltimber is funding the planting and long-term care of 1,200 Ironwood trees in Gunung Karasik and Lamandau, Kalimantan. The work will be carried out hand-in-hand with Indigenous farmers, local youth, and Dayak elders, who will help establish a community-based nursery to guarantee the quality and survival of the seedlings. This is not just about planting trees, but about restoring an ecosystem and building community stewardship for the long term.

The program also includes a strong research component. Replant World’s team will identify and map existing Ironwood mother trees, creating a geotagged forest inventory that records their size, age, and location. This data will not only guide restoration efforts but also strengthen advocacy for long-term forest protection. Communities will also monitor fruiting seasons and create a planting and seed-collecting guide that adapts to shifting climate and forest cycles. In parallel, oral traditions and customary laws connected to Ironwood will be documented, turning cultural wisdom into practical conservation guidelines for future generations.

Transparency and accountability

To ensure credibility and measurable impact, Replant World will provide Kaltimber with regular reports detailing the project’s progress. These updates will include planting maps, survival rates, scientific insights, and transparent data on how funds are used. By sharing this information with our partners and clients, we want to make reforestation tangible and real—something people can track, not just imagine.

A natural extension of Kaltimber’s mission

At Kaltimber, we have always believed that sustainability begins with responsibility. Our reclaimed wood comes exclusively from old bridges, houses, boats, and jetties—structures that have already served their purpose. By working only with this material, we avoid cutting living trees while giving valuable wood a second life. Our CSR program reflects the same values: conservation, regeneration, and respect for natural and cultural heritage.

This new partnership with Replant World represents the next chapter in that ongoing story. It strengthens a CSR tradition we have never paused, while making it more ambitious and impactful. By blending modern ecological science with Indigenous knowledge and cultural preservation, we are helping to plant the seeds—literally and figuratively—for a future where Ironwood thrives again.

Looking ahead

The first year of the project will focus on seed collection, nursery development, and the out-planting of 1,200 seedlings, alongside the mapping of mother trees and the creation of a seasonal guide for seed collection. Over time, the project will expand as seedlings mature, survival rates are tracked, and communities deepen their conservation leadership.

For architects, builders, and homeowners who choose Kaltimber’s materials, this partnership creates a meaningful link: every reclaimed plank you use is connected to a living forest being restored in Kalimantan. Together, we are proving that sustainable design can not only avoid harm but actively give back.

Let’s grow together

If you’re an architect, developer, or homeowner building for longevity, partner with us. Let’s extend your project’s impact from durable reclaimed materials to living forests—and keep Ironwood standing for the next generation.
