Rooted in Progress: Growing Our Commitment, One Ulin Tree at a Time

The first Ulin seedlings are in the ground! Together with Replant World, we’ve begun restoring Ironwood forests in Kalimantan — a project rooted in patience, culture, and regeneration. Read about how this journey is growing, one Ulin tree at a time.

Early September, we shared the beginning of a meaningful chapter for Kaltimber — our collaboration with Replant World to restore Ironwood (Ulin) forests in Kalimantan. What began as a shared vision to give back to nature and local communities is now taking root, quite literally.

Taking the first steps

We’re proud to share that 85 Ulin trees have already been planted by Replant World in Gunung Karasik and Lamandau. Each seedling represents patience and continuity — values deeply tied to the nature of Ironwood itself. Slow-growing and remarkably strong, Ulin is a living symbol of endurance, both in the forest and in the cultural traditions of the Dayak people who have long protected it.

These first plantings mark the tangible beginning of a long-term restoration effort: to see Ulin return to the landscapes where it once stood tall, and to ensure that future generations can continue to benefit from its presence.

The next phase

As the rainy season approaches, an additional 400 Ulin trees are scheduled for planting between November and December, depending on soil and weather conditions. This next phase will expand the project’s reach, further strengthening the community-based nursery and the collaboration between Replant World, Indigenous farmers from Dayak Ma'ayan community in Gunung Karasik, and Dayak elders.

Together, they are not only planting trees but cultivating knowledge — observing fruiting seasons, collecting seeds, and mapping the remaining mother trees to preserve genetic diversity and guide future restoration work.

A living continuation of our mission

At Kaltimber, sustainability has always been about responsibility and renewal. Our reclaimed wood comes exclusively from disused bridges, boats, and homes — materials that have already lived a life and are ready for another.

Through our partnership with Replant World , we are extending that same philosophy to the forest itself: what we reclaim, we now help to regenerate. It’s a continuous cycle — from preservation to restoration — where design, craftsmanship, and nature meet.

Looking ahead

As seedlings take root and grow, so does our commitment. The collaboration with Replant World is more than a project; it’s an evolving relationship between people, culture, and the land.

We look forward to sharing more updates as the forest begins to take shape — one Ulin tree at a time.
