Reclaimed Borneo Ironwood flooring - Hardwood from North Indonesia

Wood flooring texture smooth and rustic. Best flooring option.

Borneo ironwood, recognised locally as Ulin, is a remarkable wood. It's extremely slow growth rate at less than 0.5mm a year results in an immensely dense wood perfect for exterior applications. Ulin heartwood has a Class 1 natural durability above and in-ground rating, and is looked after for its natural endurance to rot, decay, borer insects and weathering. It has long been used by Kalimantan Dayak population in traditional habitation construction as well as for bridges and routes. Ulin is endemic to only a few places in Southeast Asia with the majority of remaining distribution limited to Borneo island. Ulin trees can live to be more than 1,000 years old. Kaltimber's Ulin, known as the best hardwood 100% recycled in the market, comes from unused building in Kalimantan including households, warehouses, bridges, roads, marina and other structures. This material yields a superb and enduring flooring product.

How to choose your flooring?

When architects design indoor living spaces, many will look at hardwood flooring options. It can serve many functions, and improve the appearance of any living area while being a pleasure to walk on bare feet. This is especially true if flooring manufacturers have paid close attention to the tongue-and-groove process and that, as a result, the flooring planks are joined strongly together.

The feel of the wood floor will also be different depending on the texture chosen by your architect or contractor. Would you prefer a smooth, aka softer finishing, achieved through several hours of sanding? Or the choice would tend toward a rustic look that is a little battered and worn with dents and scratches? In the latter case, the experience would definitely lose in softness but gain in old look aspect.

However, in order for the flooring to have the best longevity possible, the quality of the wood floor planks need to be carefully considered.

With respect to hardwood flooring installation, the choice of timber needs to be looked at according to the surrounding environment. Indeed, the best flooring will be built while keeping in mind the potential presence of termite and insects as well as local weather conditions, with close attention given to moisture content. It should be noted that the wood needs 3 days minimum to be acclimated to the air where the product is being installed.

The choice of wood species cannot be forgotten of course. A popular choice in North America is the IPE hardwood; Its high density, makes it one of the most durable woods in the world. His southeast asia counterpart is Ulin lumber, commonly called Ironwood. Both choices offer a low maintenance, thus, an initial cost more than compensated over time.

A consideration that should influence decisions is sustainability, particularly when laying in exotic woods. We often think that wood is environmentally friendly by nature, but not all species are respectful of sustainable logging.

Many wood options are available for new flooring in your interior from legally harvested new wood kiln-dried to antique barnwood sourced all around the place. Wood such as old barn wood, maple, white oak, mahogany, fir flooring, eastern white pine, hickory, cypress, maple, reclaimed pine, ash and even bamboo or veneer on engineered floor or laminate floor!

Many indoor projects can be completed with wood such as parquet itself but also cabinetry, countertops or wood table, reclaimed wood furniture with beautiful knot to get that look-and-feel of nature inside your house. Every piece of wood is unique and the craftsmanship required to turn demolition into creation is sure to bring warmth and elegance on every square-foot of your new flooring vintage wood and participate in your new life.
