Why did we create I-Rewood?

As people passionate about doing our best to protect the environment in general, and Kalimantan forests in particular, we thought we were not doing enough to use the old wood we salvage from disused structures at its best potential. Then I-Rewood’s idea germinated.

After finding out that nobody was using ironwood for interior design purposes while the farmhouse look using reclaimed wood furniture and items were increasingly popular, we came to the conclusion that we had enough leftovers to do something in that department and that we could expand our circular economy purpose.

Kaltimber is a specialist of decking and flooring made of recycled ironwood boards and beams. We source this wonderful wood from the Eastern part of the Indonesian island of Borneo: Kalimantan

The wood is so precious that it is rare in its indegenous form: a tree. Indeed, it has been logged so heavily because of its amazing strength that it only remains in protected national parks.

After dismantling disused structures such as bridges, boats, or even roads, we select the best salvaged wood for our Bali factory.

Follows a very thorough check for nails and other hooks and bolts from its previous life.

Only then, after their sextrations, the board goes through our machines to become a new chapter of its amazing life as a pool deck, ceiling, or stunning flooring.

“BUT”, even with the best intentions, we have waste from this recycling process and we thought about what was the best way to give these offcuts another life as practical kitchen items, interior design decor and more! Yes, if you count the wood’s many lives, I-Rewood products are the 4th generation (tree - bridge or other, Kaltimber & Irewood)!

The story then continues to become whatever item our design team worked on to offer a diverse, yet unique catalogue of products with a long and amazing story unlike any others.

How many people could eat their favourite Asian food with chopsticks which wood comes from a boat that once sailed to every corner of the vast Indonesian archipelago?

How many hosts could tell their guest that the frame holding their family stories itself saw thousands of merchants passing by that decades old jetty?

For some it will not matter that the candle holder was once a hundreds years old tree from a remote part of some Indonesian rainforest, but nobody will remain coldhearted when looking at the particular grain of this object we would otherwise not notice.

Reusing Kaltimber’s offcuts to create something else is very self rewarding, and good for the planet. Additionally, it gives I-Rewood the chance to work with highly creative people asking the brand to give life to their dreams of homeware or decor with a soul.
